SURROUNDING
Apart from working in the studio you can go for morning swims, rest on a hill, run in the forests, sauna, climb, snorkel in the archipelago, pick berries, herbs and mushroom as well as meet people from the local area
The studio is located inside a barn from 1924, with five minutes walking distance to the sea, the swimming area is situated in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast.
Bjällansås Studio is just below a hill where you can walk up and have a wide view over the area. Besides the atelier there is a small river called Bjällansås Bäcken.
There are cows and bulls around the farm that move place every few days, sometimes nearer and sometimes further away from the studio. It is an ecological farm (KRAV-märkt). This is the link to the farm´s website: http://www.bjallansas.se
The weather fluctuates a lot, sometimes it is hot and sunny and sometimes windy and/or rainy, depending on the week. Be prepared for different kinds of weather and check the forecast on http://www.smhi.se before you come to make sure you bring clothing in relation to that.
The studio is always clean and ready to use when you have your work visit. Care is taken in relation to your work visit, so that you will have a nice time. It is always good to communicate what specific needs or wishes you may have and we would converse around what might be going on outside the studio at that point (or not).
There are different people on the farm, practicing different forms of work. The people you encounter will mostly work and think outside the dance and choreography field.
PRACTICALITIES
The space is in process and is still under construction. Every year something new arises and something small or big changes.
When you arrive to the space there will be someone showing you around the area.
Studio conditions
The space has a sprung wooden floor (dance floor is 10x6m without counting the space for the woodburner, entrance and desk area) and wooden walls. It is protected from rain and ceiled from wind. The space has a wood burner and electric heaters as well as a fan to make fresh air circulate, however it is not fully insulated which is why it is better to be here between late April and early October. Sometimes you will need to light the wood burner, or prepare the space in other ways before starting a rehearsal, so this needs to be calculated into the time plan. The context encourages you to learn more about how to ventilate and heat a place by using different strategies. These different ways are communicated on arrival.
Stairs lead up to the Studio.
Water is found in the room below the studio and can be brought to the studio with jugs or bottles.
The space is located in the middle of a farm and kind of an eco-village – why you will meet a range of different perspectives on how and with what to work. Even though mostly it is quiet; this also means, of course, that there are cow-, bull-, bee-, bird- and rooster sounds that might (depending on when you are here) be audible in the studio. Sometimes there is also sounds of different wheel loaders or tractors driving by. At times you hear a small river just outside the atelier.
Technical facilities
There are huge speakers and a sound system, that works for Aux, LP, tape and radio
There is internet access in the studio, a quick and good connection.
There is no grid to hang lights or scenery.
There are no additional dance mats that can be put over the wooden floor.
There is no additional light equipment.
The space can be made dark, through covering the windows.
There are two mirrors, 2mx0,5m, that can be moved. There are no larger mirrors that covers one or more walls.
Bedroom
When staying over you will be staying in the room below the studio. These can be used by one or max two people who come to work here together. There is an earth closet outside, down the stairs from the room you sleep in.
The place is five minutes’ walk from the sea where you also have access to a sauna. 2-3 minutes walking distance to the studio.
Kitchen above a workshop
The kitchen is located above a workshop (the workshop is used by the employees of the farm), 1 minute walking distance from the studio.
Toilet/shower
There is an earth closet close to the sleeping place and a water toilet close to the kitchen. These are used by other people on the farm as well. The shower is in the same room as the water toilet – close to the kitchen and above the workshop.
Shops
There are no food shopping possibilities walking distance from Bjällansås Studio. An alternative is to shop for the whole visit in Torp (also called Uddevalla Torp, Torp terminalen), a shopping area which you pass on the bus from Gothenburg, from Oslo and from Uddevalla. Busses from Gothenburg, Oslo and Uddevalla stops at Torp where you can alight to go shopping. Then take the next 841 tw Lysekil (comes every hour from 6:00 until 22:00/23:00 depending on the day– check http://www.vasttrafik.se/en) alight at Bokenäs skola.
There is also one smaller shop at Rotviksbro. You then alight your bus 841 at the bus stop Rotviksbro (which comes after Torp Terminalen).
You can of course also go shopping by bus during your visit.
There are some Loppis close to Bjällansås Studio where you can find retro and second hand things.
To find the studio:
From Gothenburg Central Station walk to Nils Ericsson Terminalen which is located in the same building, take buss 841 tw Lysekil, alight at Bokenäs Skola. The journey is approximately 1 h 20 min. Please check http://www.vasttrafik.se/en
From Oslo take a bus to Uddevalla Torp (also called Torp Terminalen). You can check with Swebus or Nettbuss or other companies. Change there to bus 841 tw Lysekil, check http://www.vasttrafik.se/en. The journey is approximately 3 h in total.
